Patio questions
Can you build a patio on clay?
Yes. It needs a proper base and good drainage. Read patios on clay soil.
Porcelain or stone?
Porcelain is lower maintenance and suits modern homes. Stone has natural character and suits older houses and village gardens.
My new-build garden floods. Will a patio help?
It can make things worse if water has nowhere to go. We plan drainage as part of the patio, sometimes with a permeable design.
Do I need planning permission?
A back garden patio at ground level normally doesn't. Raised platforms over 300 millimetres do, and listed buildings may need consent.
Will the patio cause damp?
Not if it's laid correctly: at least 150 millimetres below the damp-proof course with airbricks left clear.
Can you lay a patio near a big tree?
We'd usually keep some distance, because trees dry out clay and can make it move. We'll talk through the options.
Do you cover the villages?
Yes. See towns and villages.
