Sandstone
Sandstone comes in buffs, greys, golds and mixed blends. Riven slabs have a textured surface with good grip. Sawn slabs have a smooth face and clean edges for a contemporary look.
Limestone
Limestone is usually more consistent in colour, from pale buff to deep blue-black. Sawn limestone laid in a regular pattern looks smart beside a Victorian or Georgian house.
On clay ground
Natural stone is heavy and rigid, so it needs a firm base. We lay it on a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base sized for the ground. That avoids the hollows that let slabs rock.
Care
Natural stone weathers gradually. Regular sweeping keeps it tidy. Sealing is optional, depending on the stone and the look you want.
