Romanby has 1960s to modern housing and new estates. Brompton has an older village core around its green as well as newer homes.
The Vale
Yafforth, Ainderby Steeple, Morton-on-Swale, Scruton and Thornton-le-Beans: brick farm cottages and family homes on flat, clay ground.
North
East Cowton, Great Smeaton and Appleton Wiske, towards the Tees.
Towards the moors
Osmotherley and Kirby Sigston: stone cottages on higher ground at the edge of the North York Moors.
Market towns
Bedale and Thirsk, with Georgian centres and newer suburbs.
Conservation areas
Northallerton's town centre and many villages have conservation areas. Back garden patios rarely need permission, but listed buildings may need consent. North Yorkshire Council can advise.
